I left my body, knowledge, senses, feelings, memories, experiences and secrets
I left my reality, I left my life.

I was born many years ago, I came from the universe as a chemical reaction. The stellar carbons, generated in the inner nuclear furnaces of the stars, allow what would otherwise have been a failed development.
I came from the dust
of the stars.
Now, I become a pure energy form, I left the Earth as a signal, bringing the information of my my soul-existence back to the hard vacuum of the speed of light across the intergalactic dust, cosmic winds, dark energy, planetary systems, pulsars, galaxies, nebulæ, asteroids, planets, black holes, comets, electromagnetic forces.
Through this trip
I discovered Eternal, the infinity in a parallel universe.
Now I’m a part of it as music, this is my voice!
In the state of perpetual movement I’m sending a piece of meteor back to Earth as a symbol-messenger, bringing with it the secret of a new beginning of life.

Sonata Per Eterna it is a deep sentimental work, composed by the use of selected self-recorded electromagnetic radiations from the outer space and our atmosphere: (meteor echoes), VLF (Natural Radio phenomena), and radio wave communication, VHF.
This piece is inspired by my personal romantic idea feed it also by scientific notions about the journey of the soul after death to a perpetual motion in the universe. “The electromagnetic signal of the soul thought as a pure energy form, leaves the body and reach the outer space passing across cosmic storms, planets, pulsar stars, black holes, intergalactic dust, stellar winds to enter in the Krasnikov tube: a distortion of space-time that can be intentionally created in the wake of travel close to the speed of light. Through it, the soul will be able to reach the final destination discovering “Eternal” in another universe. A piece of meteor come back to earth as a symbol-messenger, bringing with it the secret of a new beginning of life.

Sonata Per Eterna is dedicated to my father Giuseppe Zapparoli, (he was a self-taught poet, singer-songwriter, composer, musician). This piece is a search for dialogue and connection with the signal of his soul.

Biography

Marta Zapparoli is an Italian sound artist, improviser, performer, and indipendent researcher active in sound art since 2003. Since 2007 she is based in Berlin. For several years, she already largely exploring the narrative potential of self-made recordings (field recordings), and from 2014 her practice has focused on the research and self made recordings of electromagnetic radiations (radio waves, VLF) coming from the atmosphere and the outer-space, and radio wave communication, man-made wireless and electromagnetic field, which has become the primary material of her artistic investigation.

Working with the inaudible She developed a deep awareness of the hidden sonic reality which surrounds us in everyday life. These electromagnetic radiations are always present and mutable in place and time and they become the mirror of our society in constant change. The inaudible allow her to understand much more the hidden characteristic of the acoustic environment we inhabit, the origin of life, and our connection with the universe.

With her imagination, awareness, and creativity, she transform these electromagnetic waves in different sonic forms through compositions, live performances, and site-specific sound interventions with the use of analog tape machines, radio receivers, detectors, and antennas. Beauty and rough/noisy matter captured and recomposed, overlap in visionary sonic worlds between art, science, autotranscendence, awareness, and cosmic imagery.

In 2019 she started an ongoing collaboration with the Astronomical Observatory (Astrofili Urania) in Luserna San Giovanni (Italy) to develop her ongoing project, diving into the vast field of radio astronomy.
Recently she started a new collaboration for sound installations with the researcher and sound artist Martin Howse. She producing sound-tracks also for video and short-film.

In 2006 she received the Movin-Up Award for her field recording project (An Audio Portrait of Berlin). She gave lectures at Sound Studies (Mapping The Field) 2ndInternational Conference of the European Sound Studies Association in Copenhagen (Denmark, 2016), at Goucher College Computer Music in Baltimore (USA, 2016), at Ahead Festival in Vilnius (Lithuania,2018), at InFlux Festival, in Berlin (DE, 2018), Music Academy in Lulea, (Sweden 2019), DBS Music School in Berlin (DE, 2020), Cologne (DE, 2021).

Marta is involved in duos, group collaborations, large ensembles, and theater projects. Active collaborations are: Pareidolia with Liz Allbee, Electromigration of Echoes Duo (with Billy Roisz), The Elks with(Liz Allbee – Kai Fagaschinski – Billy Roisz), Vertigo Transport with (Burkhard Beins), Trio with (Martin Lorenz, Sebastian Hofmann), “Un Renversement von Don Giovanni”, music theatre project with La Cage collective. Since 2009 She is a fix member of Berlin’s 24-piece Splitter Orchester.

She has played with many regarded musicians and bands and she performed worldwide in theaters, unconventional spaces, galleries, clubs and festivals such as: Lady Fest 2003, Maerzmusik 2014, Atonal 2016, A’larm 2014 & 2020, Fusion 2007, Darmstädt 2012, Heroines of sound 2018, Eavesdrop 2018, Ultra Schall 2015, Musik Für Alle UDK 2015, CTM 2019 (Germany), Huddersfield 2015, Borealis 2014 (Norway), Sonic Circuit 2013, High Zero Festival 2016 (US), Geiger 2016 & 2019 (Sweden), Interpenetration Festival 2017, Konfrontationen 2016 & 2018, Artacts 2019 (Austria), Earweare 2019, Zwei Tage Strom 2015, Earweare 2019, Crack 2013, Meteo Mulhouse Music Fest 2018 (France), Alternativa Festival 2018 (CZ), LEM festival (Spain), among others.
