Météores is a body of works inspired by the cosmos and geology that probes space-time and the complexity of matter, both physical and digital. The works result from a residency in the Tablelands in Newfoundland (Canada), one of the few places where the Earth’s upper mantle is exposed. Rich in heavy metals and poor in nutrients required to sustain life, the orange barren peridotite evoke extraterrestrial landscapes. Météores 3542, 3647, 3686 and 3763 (2017-2018) are looped animations that show 3D scans of these rocks that defy gravity, solidity or opacity.

They are reminiscent of robotic exploration of Mars as well as some physiological and psychological effects of augmented and virtual reality, such as dizziness, disorientation and dream-like state. Each scene is a world in itself, with its own atmosphere and where the laws of physics are reinvented. The works recall the implications and effects on perception of some technologies while they offer new perspectives on Earth’s substance and the processes that act upon it, such as erosion, volcanism, as well as the extraction and transformation of minerals in the context of globalization.

Biography

Interdisciplinary artist François Quévillon explores the interactions among environmental changes, societal issues, and technological developments. In his practice, he explores the phenomena of the world and of perception by implementing processes sensitive to variable conditions of the environment and human interference. His work addresses planetary changes as well as those affecting contemporary media, such as the relations between algorithms and images.

Frequently developed during artist residencies, François Quévillon’s work has been presented at exhibitions and events dedicated to contemporary art, new cinema and digital creation. Among them : Connecting the Dots (Mexico), Sundance’s New Frontier exhibition (Park City), Spaces Under Scrutiny at the Knockdown Center (New York), International Symposium on Electronic Art (Gwangju, Dubaï and Albuquerque), Festival Internacional de Linguagem Eletrônica (São Paulo), IndieBo (Bogotá), LOOP Barcelona, Contemporary Istanbul, Mirage Festival (Lyon), Show Off Paris, Festival de la Imagen (Manizales), European Conference on Computer Vision (Munich), Mois Multi (Québec), NeurIPS, RIDM, Elektra and International Digital Art Biennal (Montréal).
